Using a Gray Scale for Process Control
While this may sound like a title from the 1950’s it is still very much a good idea today. For those of you not with as many winters as this old warrior, gray scales were the process control device used before the advent of digital imaging. They were made by such companies as Stouffer, Kodak, Agfa and Gretag MacBeth. They came in reflective and transmissive versions also called sensitivity guides. The reflective gray scales usually had 12 to 19 steps and were produced by different manufacturing methods, the best being non photographic.
Profiling tools such as Kodak Q-60 targets contain gray scales as well. We will talk about using this technique to test printers to determine the best ink coverage, test monitors for gray balance and linearity, test scanners for consistency and correct exposure and maybe a few other tricks as well. We will look at creating our own digital gray scales also. Click here to sign up.
